In 2014, UNDP Egypt launched the Innovation for Development Lab (I4D Lab) as a response to the increasing complexity of local development challenges. UNDP Egypt’s I4D Lab was the first UNDP hosted lab in the region. Through the I4D Lab, UNDP Egypt explores, tests, applies and scales up new innovation trends, approaches and methodologies into development practice, mainstreaming innovation across UNDP portfolios and within government. The overall goal of the Lab is to engage vulnerable communities such as youth, women and persons with disabilities in development, providing them with the platform for innovation and collaboration on solutions to local challenges. The Lab also aims to tackle unemployment by fostering social entrepreneurship. The Lab encourages collaboration between all stakeholders in the local innovation ecosystem, with a specific emphasis on public-private-people partnerships. UNDP Egypt’s I4D Lab has been identified as one of the key mentor partners to the new Country Accelerator Labs.
